Professor Lars Johan Materstvedt holds a PhD (Norwegian dr.art.) in political philosophy and works at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway.
He is currently doing research within ethical theory (metaethics and normative ethics), and lectures on history of philosophy and theory of science.
His doctoral dissertation Rights, Paternalism, and the State (1996) is on the libertarianism (extreme liberalism) of US philosopher Robert Nozick in his now classic Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974), focussing on the right to self-determination (individual freedom) and partly exploring this position utilizing central elements of the ethical and political thinking of Immanuel Kant. The work was funded by The Ethics Programme of The Research Council of Norway, and was supervised by Professor Thomas Pogge, Philosophy Department, Yale University, USA.
As a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Norwegian Cancer Society Materstvedt carried out research on the relationship between euthanasia and palliative medicine, which included conducting interviews with terminally ill cancer patients about their attitudes towards euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (see publication 38). Medical supervisor was Professor Stein Kaasa, Chief Physician at the Palliative Medicine Unit, Cancer Department, St. Olavs University Hospital, Trondheim.
Materstvedt was Chair of The Ethics Task Force on Palliative Care and Euthanasia of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC). This group of researchers - consisting of six physicians, one sociologist and one philosopher - produced a paper that expresses the EAPC's official opinion on the issue. Professor Lars Johan Materstvedt fra Haugesund er dr.art. i politisk filosofi og arbeider ved Filosofisk institutt, Det humanistiske fakultet, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU), Trondheim.
Han forsker for tiden innen etisk teori (metaetikk og normativ etikk), og underviser i filosofihistorie og vitenskapsteori.
Doktoravhandlingen Rights, Paternalism, and the State (1996) drøfter primært synet på retten til selvbestemmelse (individuell frihet) innen libertarianismen (en ekstrem form for liberalisme) til den amerikanske filosofen Robert Nozick i det nå klassiske verket Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974), en posisjon som delvis utforskes ved å anvende sentrale elementer fra den etiske og politiske tenkningen til Immanuel Kant. Skrevet med stipend fra Etikkprogrammet, Norges forskningsråd, under veiledning av professor Thomas Pogge, Philosophy Department, Yale University, USA.
Tidligere postdoc-stipendiat i Kreftforeningen, med et tverrfaglig forskningsprosjekt om forholdet mellom palliasjon og eutanasi, utført ved Seksjon lindrende behandling (SLB), Kreftavdelingen, St. Olavs Hospital, Trondheim. Prosjektet inkluderte kvalitative (semi-strukturerte) intervjuer med kreftpasienter med kort forventet levetid om deres holdninger til eutanasi og legeassistert selvmord (se publikasjon 38, og les en oppsummering av funnene). Medisinsk veileder: professor Stein Kaasa, seksjonsoverlege ved SLB.
Materstvedt var leder av The Ethics Task Force on Palliative Care and Euthanasia, European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC). Denne forskningsgruppen - bestående av seks leger, en sosiolog og en filosof - publiserte en artikkel som representerer EAPCs offisielle syn på temaet.
